Yeah, we have "clean streets" over here in the Magic City (not to be confused with the Magic Kingdom).  And do we have commerce. Yesterday George Barber probably the richest man in Alabama gave away a downtown city lot at the corner of Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. (that says something in itself) and Third Avenue North.  He has been trying this for years but someone must agree to quickly build a building on the site that has a certain square footage and meets other requirments, set by Mr. Barber.

So, here's the question with the answer.  Has anyone ever had to give away a downtown lot in Houston or Atlanta?  Hell no!  No sin, no business, no hope.  Birmingham is not dying, it's dead.  Just bulldoze the entire City and forget it.  Hoover has it!

If Hoover/Pelham/Alabaster doesn't do something to get some good paying jobs in there they might as well bulldoze all of Jefferson and North Shelby Counties. 

 

It is my considered opinion (yeah… that and $1.51 will get you a cup of coffee at the Waffle House) the entire B'ham metro area is so tainted by the corruption of the Jefferson County Commission and B'ham City Clowns… er, I mean government… it has kept places like Hoover, Pelham, and Alabaster from becoming home to some big businesses that would bring good paying professional jobs to the area.  Hell that's why I'm in Georgia now, couldn't find a decent professional job in my field in the B'ham metro area.

 

Maybe the new Jefferson County Commission that will be elected in November will bring some positive change.  Till then when are the going to get around to indicting and prosecuting Betty Fine-Collins, Shelia Smoot, Humphreys, and the rest of that bunch that hasn't been convicted?

You're correct.  Your comments about Bobby Lowder were kind.  He is nearly as big of an asshole as Richard Scrushy-less jail time.  RMS ruined my wife's life and her(and my) retirement.  Get behind me and stay there-fuck the little people!

Unfortunately, the Birmingham metro area will never recover from the civil rights strife of the 1960's and the loss of heavy industry.  It is a little like Detroit and somewhat like Pittsburgh, except the big money in Pittsburgh kept some headquarters operations alive there.

The next round in the losing battle with the EPA in Jefferson County is going to be storm water management and surface pollution.  Shelby County will have some problems with this too, but not to the devistating effect that JC will.  "Politics are far to important to be left to politicians."  These elected officilas don't have a clue.  Other places have enough money floating about to give the electied officials enough graft to keep things afloat.  B'ham does not have that luxury.

Hope you come to enjoy Macon.  It's backward considering how close it is to Atlanta.  Milligeville (hope I spelled that correctly) is a quaint little town and could be really nice if it could stop some of the developer trash….

It is very socially conservative here.  I tend to get out on Sunday mornings and run my errands, buy groceries, and such.  It is amazing to me how empty the stores are here on Sunday mornings.  However; it is both a blessing and a curse.  A blessing in that I can get in and out of the grocery stores and Walmart w/o wanting to run people down in the parking lot, but a curse in that they haven't restocked the shelves from Saturdays.  I guess the majority of people tend to go to church on Sundays over here.

Hell Yeah!  Although I did see a post on one of the social networking sites, wherein someone from Atlanta had asked what to do and where to go in Birmingham over a weekend.  The answer posted was:  "Church, Walmart."

My First Cousin's son lived in Macon for a while and hated it.  He now lives in Greensboro, NC and loves it.  From this forum there always seems to be some fine ladies in Greensboro.
