Holy Crap What a Great Movie!!!

This movie will go down as one of the great westerns and one of the few remakes that works.

Most people know the story – A spunky 14-year old girl sets out to avenge her father's death with the help of an aging, drunken, one-eyed marshal.

The original starred John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Kim Darby, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper.

The new film stars – Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Hailee Steinfeld, Nicholas Sadler, Barry Pepper

See it!!!!!!

Saw it this weekend.

Jeff Bridges is a much better Rooster Cogburn than The Duke, sorry to say.

The stilted language is a bit distracting, but I think the directors wanted it to sound that way.

The details of clothing, backgrounds, etc. is authentic and believeable.

And it didn't have Glen Campbell in it!!!!

All in all, the only remake I've ever seen that was better than the original.

The only thing I can say is things were authentic enough that my nose was suffering from smelling the dirty alcohol pickled bastards.  The initial scenes were filmed in Garland, TX (substitute for Fort Smith, Arkansas); Garland is about as close as one can get to Bumfuck, Egypt inside the boundaries of the US.  Since we don't have audio, only transcripts, of 1870's daily language, the dialogue could be dubious and it seemed staged across each role, kind of like Jack Webb used to promote in his productions.  Please, I don't mean to infer that they used clipped, three word sentences, I mean uniformity in syntax, inflection, etc.

Kansas sure got a lot more broken terrain when they travel into "Indian Territory."  Got to think that eastern Oklahoma and Kansas have about as much background appeal as a stage without a backdrop. It was filmed in northern New Mexico and down in Mexico.  Guess they managed to avoid the narcotrafficones….

Liked it – one of the best westerns in decades!
