I got tired of paying $100 per month for TV so I broke down and bought a digital antenna & TiVo.  Now I've got to upgrade my router so the movies will stream faster via netflix.  LOL

Anyone out there with TiVo? Roku or stream TV shows via Hulu?

I kinda know a little about networking and the internet, probably enough to be dangerous.

Now I'm finding out that I've got to spend more $$ to get a certain router, then monthly subscription to netflix and/or hulu.  Maybe I shoulda stuck with directtv.

Basically I've got a TV in the living with the tivo hooked up to it now, TV in bedroom has nothing hooked up but planning on getting another digital antenna for it.  Not sure if I should get another TiVo box or maybe go with Roku for back there.

I think I can recoup my equipment costs in a few months by not having to pay directtv, but now I'm wondering how much a month I'll be spending on tivo/netflix/hulu subscriptions.

Ughhh, maybe I'll just renew my library membership and read more.

Red,

I was ready to make the  Roku move when I was living up north…  which model do you have?

I left Netflix when they raised their price.

I think you you would do about as well with basic cable… cartman

I tell you… I've gotten totally disgusted with TV.

There is no news.  Just politics.  Oh and Captain Stubing running his cruise ship into Italy.  It has gotten to where all the Discovery channel, History Channel, and the other channels I normally watch only have reruns of swamp logging, alligator fishing, crab catching, ice trucking, gold hunting, trash picking idiots.  I've seen the probably every episode of World's Dumbest 100 times.  Even the Mythbusters are getting old.  There hasn't been anything worth watching on network TV in years.  I'm about ready to pull the plug on the cable.

The only thing I've found recently on TV that I like is Mad Men and Hell on Wheels (they can come up with some pretty good one liners in that show… "it gits hotter than a whorehouse on nickle night" LOL!).

But I've actually found something else I like, and I find myself leaving the TV off.  I got a Kindle for Christmas.  I never thought I would like one of those, but so far I really like the little gadget.  There's a lot of books you can get for free from http://www.pixelofink.com and there's a review site a friend turned me onto called http://www.viewfromvalhalla.com/.

I've read a book called Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel.  It's genre is called Steampunk… what ever that means.  Sort of Victorian Scifi.

I've also read a romance type book called, Every Last Kiss (The Bloodstone Saga).  It's sort of a girly romance novel, but I thought it was interesting.  A teenage girl from Pasadena ends up going back in time and finds out that in a previous life she was Cleopatra's Handmaiden.

I've started a book today called the Templar Concordat.  So far it seems pretty good.  Still figuring it out.

If I keep up the reading, I may just call up Cox Cable and tell them to disconnect the TV.

I owe, I owe, so it's off to work I go.

I've actually been looking at Roku myself. Been reading up on it but have not been able to talk to anyone that actually use it. I actually have Charter right now but have been increasingly dissatisfied with the service and in particular the current cost. Keep thinking there has got to be something better.

I think if you have internet ready tv's you wouldn't need the router?

But a high speed quality level wireless router would be a one time expense.  I think you would still be saving money because your lowering your monthly fees.  I'm thinking of doing it myself in the future.

If I get one I'll probably go with the roku 2 xs, it's a little pricier but I think it's worth the difference.

http://shop.roku.com/

I know what you mean BH, I basically kept directtv for Sons of Anarchy, Justified and Hell on Wheels.  I use not to watch a lot of TV, I had a couple of shows I loved, Sopranos/The Shield but other than that I wasn't in front of the TV.  Then I got the DVR from Directtv for the ex and I started tivoing shows and wound up watching stuff that basically was crap, but it was convenient "entertainment".

I keep thinking about a kindle or some type of e-book, some of these new devices occasionally give me a killer headache so I'm hesitant to spend the $$ on something that I may wind up not using.  The ex had an i-pad and I played around on it some, it didn't seem to cause any eye/headache problems, but then again I never used it for extended periods like I would if I were reading a book.

I've done without directtv for a week now (cable isn't an option out here in the boonies) and there hasn't been any withdrawal.  ACC basketball is on the local stations, if it's another sports event I can keep up with it on ESPN.com.  Racing sucks so even when it starts back I'm not going to miss anything. I do miss American Restoration though, Rick Dale is my current hero.

I figured worse case scenario I would wait for the dvd's of the shows I do like, but then while messing around after posting the first post I came across Amazon video on demand and it appears I can get current seasons for about $3 an episode.  Yeah, that's not cheap, but I'll pay that for SOA/Justified/Hell on Wheels

Work is pretty busy now, thankfully, so I don't really need to be watching TV but I may try to get a roku for the 2nd TV over the next couple of weeks, it appears to have a built in wi-fi connection, so I don't think I'll have any additional expenses like I did with the TiVo.  Although it does look like I'll need a faster/newer router to support the download of info.

All my TV's are from 2003 when I built the house, they're fine for what I use em for, I've never been one to have to have all the latest bells & whistles, but I may break down and buy a "smart" TV after tax season.  That kind of scares me though, I already have a phone that is smarter than me, if I get a TV smarter than me I'm afraid they'll take over wink

I'm f'd up in the head (but maybe we all are a little) I looked up my car value on KBB the other day, it has 180K miles on it and it's worth maybe 1,500 or 2K, it's giving me a little trouble but not quite enough to get rid of, although I'll probably get rid of it sometime this year.  That same night I'm looking at smart TV's and they're around $1,200 I just can't quite wrap my head around paying approximately the same amount of money for a TV, when I don't really need a new one, when the car I drive on a daily basis isn't "worth" much more money.  At the same time, it's cool to have all this fun "stuff" to entertain, smart phone, DSL, satellite TV, etc. but hell, those add up to a car payment each month, and I could live without them, but damnit, if y'all have it I want it too.  I mean, I might miss out on seeing Snooki kill an alligator in Alaska using fish caught off the coast of Washington for bait while Larry the Cable Guy & Sarah Palin do color commentary.roll

The kindle I got is the kindle keyboard. It is almost like looking at paper. I've been reading on it for extended periods of time and have not had any eye strain problems like I do when Im reading on s computer or other back lite device (I.e smart phone, tablet computer, laptop, or desktop).

I owe, I owe, so it's off to work I go.

You can find quite a lot of the network shows via the different

network websites.  so long as you don't have an internet provider

which wants to charge you if you use more than a certain amount

of band width per month, you should be able to watch many

of the shows on line.  I have Clear, and can watch all of the

shows I want.  So i could tell Comcrap, shitty AT&T, all

the rest of them to kiss my ass.  cartman

I loathe and despise AT&T, NCGENT.

Unfortunately i am locked into a cell contract with the miserable cocksuckers.  But I told them to take their TV & Internet and shove

it up their asses.  cartman

I had been with Bellsouth for years on my home phone…then AT&T bought bellsouth…it was downhill from there…you could not get any customer service at all….the made it so hard to contact anyone for information…the contact info  was buried so deep on their website it would take forever to find it..then when you made contact..no service….i was getting 2 -3 phone calls a week from them trying to sell me internet and tv  and countless offers in the mail….i told them to take me off the calling list but they continued to call weekly…so enough was enough .. i switch phone service….

My cell phone was originally Bell South Mobility,

and they were WONDERFUL.  Then they were bought

out by fucking Cingular, and became a royal pain, and then

when it became AT&T, hell, I'd do just as well with 2 tin cans

and string.  Every time my contract is almost up I seem to lose

a phone and end up getting roped back in to another contract

in order to not have to pay through the nose for a fricking

phone.

I'M CURSED!!  sad
